Bloomingdale-Mrs. Katherine Corene Shearouse Hamilton, 93, of Bloomingdale, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at the home of her son, David Hamilton, of Keller, GA.
Katherine was born September 23, 1918 at Marlow, GA, the youngest of 7 children born to Barnard Jackson Shearouse and Annie Lula Johnson Shearouse. She was proud of her Salzburger heritage, her family among the first families to emigrate from Austria and settle at Ebenezer, GA.
Katherine was married to Allen Roy Hamilton on February 10, 1935, in Ridgeland, SC. She was the loving mother of two sons, Bobby and David Hamilton and also two grandsons, Robert and Tim Hamilton.
She was an avid reader, loved to travel and long time member of Alpha United Methodist Church in Bloomingdale. During WWII she worked at Southeastern Shipbuilding Corp. as a welder on the liberty ships built in Savannah. In the fifties she worked at Sears in Savannah and in the sixties was a school bus driver for Chatham County Public Schools. Over the years after her retirement she traveled throughout the United States and to several countries in Europe including Austria, the home of her Salzburger ancestors. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and siblings.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Steven (Judy) Hamilton of Houston, TX and Allen David (Pam) Hamilton of Keller, GA; seven grandchildren, Robert Hamilton of Keller, Tim and Allen Hamilton of Savannah, Troy Hamilton and Deborah H. Wendt of Houston, TX, Lisa H. Mazzeo of Beaufort, SC and Kevin Hamilton of NC; eleven great-grandchildren; special niece, Idell Smith of Pooler, GA and numerous other relatives.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
