Kathi McFerren, also affectionately known by some as "Choppy", passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, March 24, 2023. Forever would not have been long enough for us to have her, but Kathi left behind an impressive legacy of people whose lives were made better because of her love, endless support, and encouragement.
Kathi was born on July 22, 1952, in New Castle, PA, to Walt and Dorothy Shuler. She attended Union High School, then went on to attend Jameson School of Nursing. She also earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Penn State University, and her Masters of Science in Nursing from LaRoche University. She spent most of her career at Jameson Hospital in New Castle, beginning as a nurse and holding many positions, culminating in serving as Director of Outpatient Surgery. She was, of course, the family 'go to' for any and all medical questions! No one jumped quicker at the chance to pluck splinters, dress wounds and treat the endless "boo-boos" of her many nieces and nephews as they grew up. And, in the eyes of her family, no one trusted a doctor's opinion or diagnosis unless Aunt Kathi gave her approval.
In addition to her impressive career, Kathi served as mentor, role model, and inspiration to so many. She and her husband Sam never had children, but as a team they served as the best Aunt and Uncle duo anyone could ask for, even if you weren't technically related to them. Everyone called her Aunt Kathi and declared her "family."
Kathi was everyone's greatest cheerleader. She just reveled in the successes of those she cared about. Nothing made her smile like talking about her nieces and nephews.
Her favorite hobbies included playing golf, reading, and cheering on her Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. Her special time was watching NFL games on Sundays with her nephews and everyone knew that she was NOT to be disturbed during Masters week! She loved to spend time with family and friends, making many the trip to Pennsylvania from Georgia. She loved a good Jimmy Buffett song and often declared that she needed to live, "Where the weather matched her clothes."
She was an active member of Christ Baptist Church in Ellabell, GA. She loved being a member of the Black Creek Women's Golf Association, as well as the Savannah Women's Golf Association. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Effingham County sports and was the loudest cheerleader at Effingham Knights lacrosse, Effingham Jags football and Fishpitt baseball games.
She is survived by her adoring husband of 50 years, Sam, and countless numbers of family and friends who will keep a place in their heart for her forever. No one will ever forget the love and kindness she shared with anyone lucky enough to know her.
No funeral service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please express condolences by making a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).
