Pooler-Kathryn Myrl Bazemore Bragg, also known as "Kitty" and "Kay," passed away
peacefully at home in her sleep the morning of Sunday, January 23, 2011.
She was born in Jacksonville, Florida on September 9, 1917, to Hoyt Redding Bazemore
and Joyce Estelle Lawrence Bazemore. At the age of two, she was injured in a street car
accident, resulting in the amputation of her left arm; which she considered an
inconvenience rather than a hadicap. There was nothing she could not do if she set her
mind to it.
She was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, before moving to Savannah, Georgia, as a
teenager. She graduated from the old Savannah High School and attended Tennessee
College, where she played a trumpet in the marching band.
On Christmas Eve, 1936, Kitty married Louis Arnold Bragg. They had a daughter, Verna
Jean Bragg Warner-Wilder; and two sons, Lewis (a/k/a Louis) Arnold Bragg, Jr. and
Donald Carl Bragg.
In the 1960's, Kitty moved to Los Angeles, California. Her co-workers where she
volunteered at the American Red Cross dubbed her "Kay." She was soon recognized as a
valuable employee and offered a paid position in an administrative assistant role. One of
her duties was to call people, reminding them they were again eligible to donate blood.
Many of those she contacted were well-known stage and screen actors and actresses. She
also volunteered to "man the phones" at a Jerry Lewis Telethon, where she met some of
those well-known individuals and others.
When her health became poor in 2007, she was moved to live with her daughter in
Pooler, Georgia. A lover of music, she thoroughly enjoyed watching her new friends line
dance and sing karaoke while "chair dancing" in her wheelchair. Sometimes, she would
be twirled around on the dance floor, which she loved.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, and her son, Don. In addition to her
daughter, Jean (husband Gene Wilder), and son, Lou, she is survived by three grandsons,
Robert John Busch, Jr., of Pooler, Georgia, Daniel Glenn Peeling of Portland, Maine, and
Richard Arnold Bragg of Harbor City, California; one granddaughter, Dawn Michelle
Bragg McCarthy of Sunrise, Florida; one great-grandson, Nicholas Daniel Peeling of
Gorham, Maine; a brother-in-law, Rufus (wife Reba) Bragg; extended family sons
William Elbert "Bert" (wife Carol) Lloyd of Calhoun, Tennessee, and Howard William
"Howie" (wife Dixie) Peeling of Blairsville, Georgia and Neill Andersen; a number of
nieces, nephews, extended family grandchildren and friends. She will be lovingly
remembered by all.
As she requested, she was cremated with no services held. In lieu of flowers, she
preferred that donations be made to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, P.O. Box
13190, Savannah, Georgia 31406.
