Kay Peterson Jones

Kay Peterson Jones, 92, passed away Monday, August 10, 2026 after a brief illness. Kay was originally from Mt. Vernon, GA but has resided in Rincon, GA for the last 36 years. Previously she and her husband, Herb, spent over 30 years in Savannah, GA.

Kay leaves a legacy of service to her church, her family and her community. She was an active member of various Methodist churches all of her life and was involved in many aspects of the church. This was evident by her contribution of time, talents and serving as Financial Secretary at White Bluff Methodist and Rincon Methodist. She particularly enjoyed the choir and hand bells.

She graduated with a BS degree from the University of Georgia where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. This was where she met the love of her life, Herb Jones.

She also served in many capacities in her community from Scout leader, PTA activist, and was a fill in as needed pianist/organist at White Bluff Methodist Church and Rincon Methodist Church.

Among her many civic and charitable organizations that she served as an officer for the Savannah Chapter of the DAR where she was a 50 plus year member; the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter L and the Effingham County Department of Family and Children Services.

Kay was a member of the Garden Club of Rincon. She enjoyed gardening, reading and playing bridge with long-time bridge club friends.

She is survived by her children Sharon Jones Sigman (Richard) of Winterville, NC; Cindy Jones Kearny (Jack) of Lawrenceville, GA; and Philip Todd Jones (Kimberly) of Hardeeville, SC. She also is survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; one brother, Edward Peterson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Katherine Harrell and John Powell Peterson; her husband of 68 years Herb Jones, her brother Ray Peterson and grandchild Lauren Christine Jones.

Visitation will be at Rincon Methodist Church on Friday, August 14, 2026 at 11:00am and funeral service at 12:00. Burial will be in Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Rincon Methodist Church, 107 Savannah Avenue, Rincon, GA 31326.
