Obituary

Kelvin A. Dixon, Sr

Kelvin A. Dixon, Sr. of Pooler, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.

Kelvin was born in Savannah, Georgia on September 22, 1955 to Kelly W.(dec.) and Edna Dollie Dixon. He stayed in Port Wentworth growing up, graduated from Groves High School in 1973, a well-known student who excelled and a member of the ROTC. His love of all things fast began at a young age and in high school was proud of his 1965 Ford Mustang. His first job was working in HVAC and then he began his life-long career at Gulfstream Aerospace from which he retired in June 2021 after completing 45 plus years, finishing his career a shop lead. Kelvin and Debra celebrated his grandson's high school graduation, his retirement and successful prostate cancer removal surgery (with which he was diagnosed in the Fall of 2020) with a family trip to visit National parks in the upper mid-western states.

Throughout his life, Kelvin displayed a true servants heart by being quick to help with any project and sacrifice his time and energy to assist any needs. He enjoyed different volunteer opportunities including sound board engineer at Windsor Forest Baptist Church and later at FBC Richmond Hill. He would faithfully operate the sound board for church services as well as various events throughout the week and holiday seasons. He was especially fond of his 24 years of service with the Richmond Hill Volunteer Fire Department where he became Captain of the road response team and specialized in using the jaws of life. Kelvin spent countless hours in training and would take time off work yearly to teach fire safety to children in the local elementary schools. His family became accustomed to hearing his radio go off in the night followed by sounds of their Dad tearing off down the hallway. He enjoyed participating in the special events including driving the firetrucks in parades and assisting in their fundraisers. In 2002, he was part of a crew who rescued a young boy from a house fire and later received an award for being the only firefighter in Richmond Hill to rescue a child from a house fire up to that point.

Kelvin's biggest passion was his family with Debra. While they attended the same high school, they had not met until the Summer of 1983, when Kelvin noticed a beautiful single Mother of two across the street struggling to mow her grass. Being the kind-hearted man that he was, he immediately ran over to help. July 30 th , Debra agreed to a date on his motorcycle and on September 2nd they were married. They were thrilled to become a family of four, he was eager to take on the roll of Father and Husband, making our family whole again- later he would legally adopt the girls. In the evenings after work, he would take Kimberly and Hollie for motorcycle rides around the yard. Less than two years later, Kelvin Jr. was born. The following year, they made their home in Richmond Hill where they would raise their children. In 1991, they would welcome their happy accident, a sweet baby girl, Kelvin named her Laurie.

In his free time Kelvin enjoyed listening to classic rock, watching NASCAR or sci-fi, riding one of his motorcycles, water skiing behind his boat, and driving his Grand Turino. He always had his camera out and enjoyed taking photos of nature and family, even taking selfies with his Grandbabies. He would read their text books to try to help his children with their homework when they were struggling. Occasionally his competitive streak would show and he would say "well that's the only way you're gonna learn to play correctly" while winning games of chess and checkers against his children and grandchildren. He also loved to cheer on the victories of his family by attending as many band performances, choir concerts, sports games or running events as possible. Even then, he was not just a spectator, he would find ways to volunteer.

Kelvin is forever loved by his devoted wife Debra Stone Dixon, his children Kimberly (Brad) Johnson, Hollie (Jeff) Hart, Kelvin Allan Dixon, Laurie (David) Carter and his grandchildren Ethan, Evan, Eric, Holden, Jayden, Isaiah, Harper, Norah, and Shiloh. He is cherished as a father, grandfather, son, uncle, brother, and the many people who knew him. He was truly considered a son to his in-laws John "Johnnie" C. Stone, Dorothy Hamilton Stone (dec.), and Carolyn Stone. Siblings: Wanda Rollf, Elaine (Ken) Nichol, Craig (Kathi) Dixon, and several nieces and nephews. He was also considered a brother by his wife's siblings: Doyace (Mary) Stone, Connie (George) Jenkins (dec.), John Larkin (Karon) Stone, Donnie (Katrina) Stone, Lesa (Steven) Hall, and a favorite Uncle by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank our community of believers and supporters for the many faithful prayers, heart-felt messages, thoughtful gifts and warm meals over the last two weeks. We have been deeply humbled and blessed by the outpouring of love from close family, friends and total strangers. We are turning our prayers from asking for a miracle to praises of thanksgiving for the wonderful and generous man Kelvin was during his time with us. We are heartbroken yet we have joy in knowing that Kelvin was a believer and we will see him again in our Heavenly home. Though we sorrow, we sorrow with Hope.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer, and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:4-7

"And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

The visitation will be on Sunday, August 29, 2021 from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the funeral to follow at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Effingham Memorial Gardens.
