Mr. Lawton M. Nease, Jr.
Guyton – Mr. Lawton M. Nease, Jr. , 91, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010 at his residence.
Born July 16, 1919 in Effingham County to the late Lawton M. Nease, Sr. and Evelyn Seckinger Nease he served in the U.S. Navy from 1940-1945 during WWII and the Occupation of Japan. He was the owner and operator of L.M. Nease Service Station in Guyton for over 56 years.
He was a member of Guyton United Methodist Church where he co-founded the Men's 5th Sunday Breakfast in 1956, served as a Sunday School Teacher, and served on various committees. He was a member of the Guyton Masonic Lodge, #428 F. & A.M for over 70 years, the Scottish and York Rite, Alee Temple, Coastal Daylight Lodge, and the Sojourners.
He served on the C & S Bank Board, Guyton City Council from 1946-1978, the GA Southern Coastal Area Planning Board from 1965-1972. He served as a Effingham County Methodist Campground Trustee, on the Restoration of the Courthouse Committee, received the John Adam Treutlen Award in 1995, and the Lifetime Service Rotary Award.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Pool Nease, daughter, Marsha Usher, and grandson, Lawton MacDonald Nease, IV.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sue Nease Exley and Bill of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, Lawton "Mac" Nease, III and Brenda of Atlanta; grandchildren and spouses, Jim and Becky Exley of Alpharetta, Rhett and Nichole Exley of Cumming, and Shannon Wilkins of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Margaret, Lawton, and Mary Bowden Wilkins, Natalie, Ally, Emery, and Briggs Exley; brother, Warren A. Nease of Statesboro; and his caregiver and friend, Elise Jenkins.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Guyton United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow in Guyton Cemetery.
