Chief Petty Officer Louis M. Scott, Jr.
Kildare – Chief Petty Officer Louis M. Scott, Jr., United States Navy (Retired), 89, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Hospice Savannah after a long illness.
Chief Scott served in combat roles in ships in World War II and the Korean Conflict after enlisting in 1943 at the age of 17. He transferred to the Fleet Reserve in 1962. His duties included Bow Gunner on an LST at Iwo Jima, Landing Craft Repairman on an LST at Inchon, Small Boat Operator at Guantanamo Bay (which included a fishing trip with President Truman), Admiral's Driver for COMSUBFLTLANT, Ground Control Approach power plant maintenance at NAF Adak, and his final assignment was "pushing boots" at Recruit Training Center, San Diego.
After retirement from the military, Lou worked at a shipyard and performed maintenance for Screven County and Effingham County BOE.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and life in-general. He was a member of the Screven County Shrine Club, the VFW, and the American Legion.
He was a member of Mizpah United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Club, and Men's 5th Sunday Breakfast at Guyton United Methodist Church.
Lou was preceded in death by his parents, Louis M. Scott, Sr., and Ruby Porter Scott; sisters, Elizabeth Scott Poole and Ina Scott Dasher; and Virginia Sowell Scott, his dear wife for 67 years.
He is survived by a sister, Nell Tomlin; a brother, Mack Scott; a sister-in-law, Elsie (Julius) Tumbleston;
and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to his caregivers, Roberta Turner, Linda Turner, and Barbara Saylor.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2014 at Mizpah United Methodist Church followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
