"Granny"

Lucille V. Newsome "Granny" of Meldrim, Georgia passed away Sunday morning, September 16, 2007 with Stephen holding her hand. Lucille has broken the bonds of an earthly life, and today she is in a new and eternal life, free from cares and pain, winging her way with the angels. She was born on February 11, 1928 in Metter, Georgia. She was a member of Meldrim Baptist Church.

Affectionately known by everyone as "Granny", she never met a stranger, loved her family and friends, and was always there for everyone. Granny was loved and respected by many and loved each of them in return. No greater legacy can one leave than to be a good guide, an inspiration, and example for us to follow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gordon Newsome; son, James G. Newsome Jr.; granddaughter, Terry Lynn "Bennett" Parker Morrison; and her 12 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Jennifer Newsome of Meldrim; daughter and son-in-law, Geri and Bob Carter of Savannah; daughter, Jackie Livingston White of Savannah, several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation: 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral: 11 a.m. on Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Meldrim. Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Homes West Chatham Chapel 912-748-2444

"Granny's Love"

It started so simply, just a phrase here and there,
or maybe a memory, that vanished into thin air.
You started to repeat, things you'd already said,
offering only faint clues, as to what lay ahead.
You slowly grow worse, as the seasons pass by.
You know something is wrong, you just don't know why.

There is one thing, I want to make sure you understand,

I'm here to help, comb your hair, and to hold your hand.

Lessons in life, that you've taught through the years,

Now shows in my love, my smiles, and my tears.

You are the only mother, that I ever knew,

And I'm the man I am now, all because of you.

Thank you for being there, right from the start,

You've been my mother, my friend, the beat of my heart!
