Marie Smith Carter

Clyo – Marie Smith Carter, 73, passed away January 23, 2026 at Memorial Health.

The Chatham County native was a retired register nurse having worked many years at St. Joseph’s Hospital and retiring from Effingham Hospital and Care Center. She enjoyed gardening and her chickens. She received her Kundalini Reiki Masters and also performed Qigong.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Glenn Smith, Sr. and Agnes Marie Phillips Smith; and brother, William Glenn Smith, Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Keith O. Carter; children, Carol Johnson (Stephen), Daniel Yawn (Laura), and Donald Miller, III (Leann); step-children, Kevan Carter (Amy) and William Clint Carter (Angela); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the Strickland Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at Brickyard Cemetery.
