Mrs. Mary B. Broadaway
Port Wentworth/Guyton-Mrs. Mary B. Broadaway, 87, passed away Friday, August 15,
2008, after a short illness at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
She was born on September 19, 1920, to Hattie Lake and William Rabun Battle in
Wadley, Georgia. She graduated valedictorian in 1937 from Wadley High School. She
attended Georgia Teacher's College (now G.S.U.) and graduated from Georgia State
College for Women in 1940. She received her Masters Degree in Library Science from
Stetson University in 1976. She taught Home Economics, Math, Science, and Library
Science for 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel Joseph Broadaway, a son,
Tommy, three sisters, and one brother.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Dumas, and "favorite son-in-law", Kenny,
granddaughter, Kristi Dumas Taylor and husband Michael, grandson, Walter Dumas and
wife, Lauren, great-grandson, Blade Taylor, great-granddaughter, Aidan Taylor, several
nieces and nephews, and her extended Church family at Port Wentworth United
Methodist Church where she taught the Nona Grovenstein Sunday School Class, was
treasurer of the Bennett-Howell Circle, and was an active member of the Prayer Shawl
Ministry.
She was a loving, generous, supportive, and unselfish Mother, Grandmother, and
Great-Grandmother who cherished spending time with a good book, a crossword puzzle,
or her friends and family.
The visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, at the Thomas C. Strickland
& Sons Funeral Home in Pooler.
The funeral to celebrate Mrs. Broadaway's life will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 18,
2008, at the Port Wentworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Grable Page officiating.
Mrs. Betty Usher will be playing the organ and Mr. Ernie Stanhope will be the vocalist.
Active Pallbearers will be Walter Dumas, Bobby Bowers, Tommy Tipton, David Dumas,
Michael Taylor and Dennis Temples. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Nona
Grovenstein Sunday School Class, the Bennett Howell Circle and the Prayer Shawl
Ministry. Mrs. Broadaway will lie in state from 9-10 a.m. at the Church. Burial will
follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
