Port Wentworth – Mary Margaret Mears aka Midge, passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on April 22, 2025, at Pruitt Health Seaside in her hometown.
She was born on June 3, 1958, in Savannah and lived her whole life in Port Wentworth. She was a twin. She never married and did not have any children.
She attended Port Wentworth Elementary School and was a 1975 graduate of Robert W. Groves High School. She attended Draughn's Junior Business College, where she received job skills, training and earned a certificate prior to entering the workforce.
On December 10, 1979, she began working for the Savannah Morning News and Evening Press as the Day Editorial Clerk. Her other positions included Paste Up Artist, Monitor and finally as an Inserter. Her 39-year career came to an end after retiring due to a medical disability.
Midge was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Port Wentworth. She was an avid reader, enjoyed going to the movies, and collecting coins, horse figurines, sports cards, comic books and action figures. She enjoyed socializing and the activities at the Ed Young Senior Center in Port Wentworth.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Jacobs Mears; father, Luther B. Mears and her twin brother Luther B. "LB" Mears, Jr.
She is survived by a brother, Ralph Mears (Janice) of Guyton, GA; her sisters, Donna Latham (Scott) of Guyton, GA, Susan Chester (Ricky) of Port Wentworth, GA, and Amy Meals (Kirk) of Port Wentworth, GA. She is also survived by her eldest niece, Heather Jackson Fish; her nephews, Trey Jackson, Adam Chester, Stephen Mears, Chris Mears, and Lance Chester; and her youngest niece, Erin Meals Sawyer. She has several great nieces and nephews as well.
Visitation will be from 4:00pm-6:00pm on Sunday, April 27 at Thomas C. Strickland Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel in Pooler.
The funeral service will be at 11:00am on Monday, April 28 at First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth.
Interment will be held at 2:00pm following the service at Hillcrest Abbey East on Wheaton Street in Savannah.
Remembrances may be made in her memory to FBC Port Wentworth, March of Dimes, or the Alzheimer's Association.
