Mavis Oglesby Johnson
Mavis Oglesby Johnson, 91, died peacefully at home Wednesday, Sept 15, 2010
surrounded by family.
The Effingham County native was a member of the Rincon First Christian Church and the
Women's Tuesday Morning Bible Study Group. She was the co-owner along with her late
husband William O. Johnson, Sr. of Johnson's Store and a homemaker, mother, and
friend to many. She loved to travel, from military assignments across the United States to
a recent trip to Egypt and Kenya during her 87th year. Family, friends, and church were
most important to her, and nothing pleased her more than when her large family filled
several pews of Rincon First Christian Church.
Mrs. Johnson, known to many in and beyond her family as Granny Mavis was preceded
in death by her parents, Robert L. and Eva Oglesby.
Survivors include her children, Linda and George Coley of Rincon, Gerrianne and
Richard Wolcott of Decatur, Joan and Frank Lee of Springfiled, Johnny and Joyce
Johnson of Tybee Island; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Maree Harden
and Martha Ziegler, brother Morris Oglesby all of Rincon; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rincon First Christian Church. Mrs. Johnson
will lie in state from 1 p.m. Interment will be in Rincon Cemetery.
