was the third of four daughters of Barton Kee and Anna Kieffer Shearouse.
A graduate of Effingham Academy and the University of Georgia, Mrs. Alderman taught
school at both the elementary and high school levels in Effingham and Bulloch Counties,
before retiring after 39 years of service in 1976. She was elected to the educators'
honorary society, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Theta Chapter, and was a member of the
Effingham Retired Teachers Association. Following her retirement, she served as a
part-time employee of Effingham County Hospital in patient services from 1990 to 2002.
Before and after her retirement, she was a consummate, dedicated volunteer. She and her
husband, "Lonnie," were recognized in 2001 for their many volunteer efforts with the
John Adam Treutlen Award presented by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
She served 5 terms in Georgia's Silver-haired Legislature, from 1982 to 1992. She was
an early member of the Effingham County Hospital Auxiliary, holding virtually every
office from 1976 to 2004; devoted more than 7000 hours of volunteer service to the
Hospital; and was recognized as Hospital Volunteer of the Year in 1989, and with an
Exemplary Service and Honorary Life Membership in 2006. She was a charter member
of the American Legion Auxiliary, Effingham Post 209; served as President 11 times; and
served in a number of district and state-wide offices. She was a member of the
Association of Business Women of America, and was recognized as its 1984 Woman of
the Year.
Daughter of a Real Daughter, she was a charter member of the Effingham Hussars
Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and served as founding secretary of
the organization, in addition to numerous other offices. With her husband she was a
member of the leadership of the Effingham County Fair Committee for more than 40
years, retiring in 1994. She was a Life Member of the Georgia Salzburger Society. She
delivered Meals-on-Wheels to the home-bound from 1976 to 2004. She served on the
Human Resources Sub-committee for the Effingham County Master Plan, was a
fundraising volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a Troop Leader for the Girl
Scouts of the USA, a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts of the Boy Scouts of the USA, a
4-H Leader, a member of the Effingham County Band Boosters, a long-time volunteer
with Hospice Savannah, and was active with little theater groups in the county in the
1950s and 1960s. A long-time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church--and a gifted
pianist--she taught herself to play organ, and served as church organist for many years.
Past president of her local senior citizens center, she continued to play piano for its
members until her death.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sisters-Ruth Seckinger, Esther
Pruett, and Madeline Sutton. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Barton A.
