Port Wentworth-Mrs. Opal T. Carter, 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Westview Nursing Home.
Mrs. Carter was born in Sorrento, FL to the late Staten & Claire Taylor. She lived in Alma before moving to Port Wentworth in 1958. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Albert Carter, and her son, Dennis Albert Carter, Jr. She worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" building Liberty Ships in Brunswick, GA during World War II. She was an excellent homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth where she was involved with various groups.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dennis Paulette DeRycke (Richard), of Edgewater, MD; sister, Leona Schlene of Michigan City, IN; grandsons, Thomas DeRycke (Sara), and Michael DeRycke, all of Edgewater, MD; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth located at 402 Pinehurst Place. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
