Springfield, Georgia lost a beloved resident, Robert "Steve" Smith, on June 25, 2024. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve, born in Savannah in 1951, was the son of Robert "Bobby" Smith and Kathleen (Sikes) Smith. Sadly, he was predeceased by his sister Crystal (Smith) Morrow. After graduating from Effingham County High School in 1970, Steve served for seven years in the Georgia Army National Guard.
Alongside his military service, Steve embarked on a successful career with CSX Corporation, working as a trainman/conductor for two decades. He then leveraged his experience to establish Effingham Drywall and Insulation, a respected company serving Effingham and surrounding counties.
Steve's life revolved around his family. He cherished spending time with them, whether it was on the water boating and fishing, hunting in the woods, enjoying the thrill of racetracks, or simply relaxing at home. Devoted to his grandchildren, he always looked forward to their visits and creating lasting memories.
Steve leaves behind a legacy of love. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Peggy (Zittrouer) Smith of Springfield; children, Sandy (Wesley) Granade of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Robbie (Matthew) Wilkes of Dudley, Georgia, Megen (Clay) Conner of Stilson, Georgia, Slade Smith of Springfield, Georgia; grandchildren, Morgan (Conner) Davis of Smyrna, Adam & Sam Granade of Sharpsburg, McKinley & Hilton Wilkes of Dudley, Smith and Case Conner of Stilson, Ford Smith of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Harper Alex Davis of Smyrna; siblings, Kathy Mincey of Bluffton, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2024 at the funeral home.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2024 at Guyton Christian Church.
