Obituary

Ralph Vernon Dodd, 90, passed away peacefully after a short illness January 5th, 2015 in Savannah, GA.
He was born in Seneca, SC on June 23, 1924. He was a World War II Navy Veteran having served on Destroyer Escort 39, USS Lovering. He was Terminal Manager at Akers Motor Lines in Greenville, SC which led him to move to Savannah, GA in 1952, where he worked for twenty five years then started his own trucking company, Dodd's Transfer, which he owned for twenty years. He was a member and past President of the Transportation Club. He served on the Garden City Council for ten years, he was a longtime member and past president of the Garden City Lions Club, a member of Garden City United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Men's Club. He was a member of both the State and National Chapters of The Destroyers Escort Sailors Association where he attended numerous reunions over the years. He was a meals on wheels volunteer for many years in Garden City.
He was preceded in death by his mother Marie Moore Dodd, his father Warren Thomas Dodd and his brothers Otis James and Clay Edger.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Janie C. Dodd, six children Cherry Exley (Randall), Brenda Wise (Randy), Tommy (Ann), Lee (Sandra), Cindy Dodd and Stephen (Dana), his sister Helen Blair and sister-in-law Hazel Reed, eleven grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 12 noon until 1:15 p.m. at the Garden City United Methodist Church with the funeral to follow at 1:30 p.m. in the church. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Bryan Exley, Wayne Austin, Timmy Dodd, Robert Odom, Dustin Odom, Tyler Dodd, Michael Hawthorne, Josh Dodd, Dylan Day, and John Brownley.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Garden City United Methodist Men's Sunday school class.
The family would like to thank United Hospice & Savannah Commons for their support during this difficult time.
