James Ray Mercer
Rincon- James Ray Mercer, 69 passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Hospice Savannah. He was born in Greeneville, Tennessee, spending the last 30 years in Rincon.
He was a member of the Rincon United Methodist Church where he attended the John Wesley Sunday School Class and participated in many other church activities. Ray was a Mason with the Accacia Lodge #452.
Ray graduated from the Nashville Auto Diesel College and attended East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring from the Georgia Air National Guard 165th Air Lift Wing. He retired from the Civil Service DPW Hunter Army Air Field, Savannah, Georgia after 34 years.
He loved gardening while sharing his plentiful bounty with his church and work place friends.
His grandchildren were his special pride and joy, often riding around on the farm with Granddad in a golf cart, a tractor, truck or anything with wheels. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dawson and Margaret Mercer of Greeneville, TN.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty six years, Linda Mercer; son, Colonel James Calvin Mercer of Dover, DE; daughter, Deborah Young (Chris) of Maui, HI; three grandchildren, Alyssa Young, Aiden Young and Chandler Mercer; brother, Gene Mercer (Jean) of Telford, TN; sister, Joanne Nevils (Roy) of Sevierville, TN; one niece and one great-niece.
Visitation: 6-8 pm Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in the funeral home.
Funeral: 11 am Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Rincon United Methodist Church.
Interment: Rincon Cemetery
Remembrances: Rincon United Methodist Church, Social Hall Fund.
