Ray Robinson Wendelken, age 84, of Four Points Rd., Jackson, GA died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin.
He was born October 13, 1928 in Savannah, GA son of the late Charles R. and Mamie Robinson Wendelken. He was a graduate of Savannah High School and served in the US Navy. Ray worked in the paper business at Union Camp for over 40 years. He worked at International Paper Co. in Tifton and in Spartanburg, SC. He served as a Deacon in the Baptist Church for over 60 years, being ordained at North Salem Baptist in Savannah and was Sunday School Supt. Other churches he was a member of include Cresthill Baptist Church in Savannah, Springfield Baptist Church, Tifton First Baptist Church. He was presently a member of First Baptist Church in Jackson where he taught a boys Sunday school class and a men's class as well as being a Deacon. He was a former member of the Kiwanis International.
Ray was an excellent gardener, wood worker and Bible scholar. He was a former member of a humorous group call the "Mixed Nuts" where he was "Dr. Humor". He loved music, played the harmonica and was an excellent whistler.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Cox Wendelken, daughters, Linda and husband R. Skylar Harwell of Hampton, GA, Marci Rae and husband, Paul Wensten, Conyers, GA; grandson, Skylar W. Harwell and wife, Laura of Jonesboro, GA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine Wendelken who died in 1980. Other survivors include his sister, Ramona Wendelken and brother, Gary Wendelken both of Savannah; his step mother, Mary Eva Wendelken, Port Wentworth, GA; half siblings, Randy Wendelken and wife Sheryl, Springfield, GA, deceased half sister, Sandra and husband, Jimmie Smith, half sister, Beverley and husband Greg Smithey, Rincon, GA and half brother, Michael Wendelken, Savannah, GA and many nieces and nephews.
Local funeral services will be Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 11:00AM in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in Jackson. Rev. Joaqinn Gonzalez, Rev. Daniel Peavey and Rev. Scott Chewning will officiate.
Ray will be carried to Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home in Rincon, GA where the family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8PM.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 2:00PM in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will be at the Goshen Cemetery.
