Raymond Roach died on November 2, 2013. He was born on August 4th, 1917 in St. Johnsbury, VT, to the late Edward and Mary Roach. He was a resident of Pooler, GA since 1945 and of Savannah Commons since March 2013. He attended school in Ridgefield, CT and Armstrong State College in Savannah.
Mr. Roach was a veteran of World War II serving with the Sixth Air Force and the Korean War with the 158th fighter Bomber Squadron of the Georgia National Guard. He retired from the Air National Guard as a Chief Master Sergeant with 38 years of service. He was a member of the Grey Eagle Society, made up of former Air National Guard personnel.
Mr. Roach worked for Sears Roebuck as Display Manager in 1946 when the store was located on Broughton Street in Savannah, GA and the new store on Drayton Street. He was a member of the Pooler Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years serving as treasurer. Mr. Roach was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Port Wentworth, GA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann Womack Roach, his twin brother, Leslie Briggs of East Concord, VT, his brother George Grant of Springfield VT and his son Wade Roach of New Bern, NC. Raymond and his twin brother Leslie were separated at birth. At the age of 37 they were reunited on the stage of the CBS television show "I've Got a Secret". Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Rita and Larry Channell of Dahlonega, GA, son and daughter-in-law Kerry and Gayle Roach of Pooler, GA, and his daughter in law Bonnie Roach of New Bern, NC, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Building Fund, Port Wentworth, GA.
The visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in the funeral home.
The funeral to honor Mr. Ray's life was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in the funeral home chapel with Father Gabriel Cummings officiating. Pallbearers were Glen Womack, Tom Morris, Robert Bukowski, Jonas Jordan, Adam Roach and Seth Roach. Music was provided by Ms. Barbara Davis. Interment followed at Westside Memorial Gardens
