Reba Hurst Brannen, 87, of New Bern, NC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 14th, 2017.
She is survived by her three sons, Lloyd Austin Brannen, III of New Bern, NC, Michael Alan Brannen of Havelock, NC, and William Gary Brannen of Cary, NC; one sister, Marjorie Adams of Savannah; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her brother, W.L. Hurst, Jr. and sisters, Evelyn Dehner and Anita Stanford.
She will be laid to rest with her family at the North Newington Baptist Cemetery, Newington, GA. She was born on the family farm near this grave site on June 20, 1930. She married Lloyd Austin Brannen, Jr. of Statesboro, GA and bore three sons. Her husband was in the U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years, and the family lived the military life residing in numerous locations across the U.S.: Lakehurst, NJ; Norfolk, VA; Santa Ana and Alameda, CA; and finally Cherry Point, NC. During times of military deployment Reba along with her three sons would stay with her parents in LA and then GA. She worked at Cherry Point, NC for 23 years as a civil service employee both at the Criminal Investigation Dept. and Naval Supply in capacities ranging from office assistant to various department heads to computer analyst supervisor before she retired.
After divorce and then retirement Reba travelled around the country hosting at campgrounds, attending spring baseball exhibition games and sightseeing. She enthusiastically enjoyed watching her boys and grandchildren compete in all of their sports activities. She stitched many personalized and cherished needlepoint pieces for her children. Her favorite movies were Gone with the Wind and Dr. Zhivago. She had a green-thumb and loved growing and tending vegetables and plants. Her favorite plants were roses, which she gave special names to. Her favorite vegetables were snap beans. She spent many an hour working on snap beans while watching TV. She was active in her church and the Red Hat Ladies as her health permitted.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 22, 1:00 - 3:00 PM at the funeral home, with a funeral service to begin at 3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at North Newington Baptist Church.
