Springfield, GA - March 9, 2024
Retired Senior Master Sergeant Lee Hunter Miles, a dedicated husband, father, mentor, and patriot, passed away in his home on Saturday, March 9, 2024. He was 49 years old.
Born in Griffin, GA, to his beloved parents Gerald L. and Susan L. Miles, Lee's journey through life was marked by resilience, service, and unwavering commitment to his country and loved ones.
From his early years moving with his family through the southeast US, from Tallassee, AL, to Anderson, SC, Lee's determination to serve his nation led him to pursue his dream of becoming a United States Marine. He joined the USMC in 1992 and swiftly rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of Sergeant in record time and earning the distinction of being the youngest Sergeant in the USMC at that time. During his service from 1992 to 1996, Lee honed his skills as a C130 mechanic, gaining invaluable knowledge from his leaders and mentors, and serving alongside his fellow brothers in arms.
In 1993, Lee encountered the love of his life, Linda, on St. Patrick's Day, and their bond was sealed in marriage on July 3rd of the same year. Their union was a testament to love, strength, and enduring partnership.
In 1997, Lee and Linda made their home in the Savannah area, where Lee joined the 165th Air National Guard (ANG) as a technician, fulfilling his passion for working with C130s. Throughout his distinguished career in the ANG, Lee excelled in various roles, including Work Leader, Crew Chief of aircraft 326, and later transitioning to the Quality Assurance office, where he served as a Lead Inspector. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to safety earned him the respect of his superiors and colleagues and the gratitude of those he served alongside.
Lee's unwavering patriotism led him to undertake multiple combat tours overseas, where his bravery and selflessness earned him numerous commendations and medals, culminating in his retirement from military service in 2017, having left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of serving with him.
In his second career with the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) as an Industrial Specialist, Lee continued his dedication to serving the warfighters, ensuring they received the equipment they needed to successfully complete their missions.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lee was a passionate outdoorsman who found solace in hunting and fishing. He delighted in sharing his love for the outdoors with family and friends, creating cherished memories at Papa's Place and on lake trips with his children, dad, brother, loved ones and long-time family friends. Lee cherished every moment spent in their company.
Lee was also an avid gun enthusiast who enjoyed target shooting. His spirit of teaching extended beyond the battlefield, as he was always willing to offer guidance and share his knowledge, whether it be on safe firearm handling or effective shooting techniques.
Retired Senior Master Sergeant Lee Hunter Miles will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of courage, integrity, and love for his country will forever inspire those whose lives he touched.
