Richard was born on March 13, 1937, in Meldrim, GA He was delivered at home on the farm by a midwife to parents Helen Moore Slater and Tom Slater.
He was predeceased by one sister, Helen (Sister) Slater Skanes and six brothers, Thomas L. Slater (Grace), Calvin E. Slater (Floy), Jack L. Slater (Betty), Lloyd B. Slater (Helen), Earl Slater (Jane) and Homer Lee Slater.
He is survived by six nieces and six nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews.
He was a friend to all and he was especially close to lifelong friends, Doris Hammock and Jeff Fordham.
Richard was a member of the Meldrim Methodist Church since his early teens. He loved to visit other churches of all denominations where he was often a speaker. He was often asked why he did not become a minister, and his answer was that he felt he could better serve people on a “one on one” basis. He was a mentor as well as an example of what a good man should be and he lived his faith.
No one ever had a kinder heart or love for his fellow man or woman, helping those in need, most of the time anonymously.
He was a well-read person, from biblical to classics. He liked classical music, collected coins, working with flowers in his yard and traveling to Israel to see the holy land. When he could get away, he enjoyed quiet time spent at St. Simons Island to unwind.
The graveside funeral and burial to honor Richard’s life will be on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Meldrim, GA
