Robert "Bobby" Lovett Bates, Jr., age 84, died at his home of a heart ailment on the second of July 2018.
Born on the 25 th of July 1933 in Savannah, Georgia, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952 and served overseas in Korea. Bobby was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 1 star and the United Nations Service Medal. He worked at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD for many years as an exhibit specialist. He arranged and built the display cases that contain the instrumentation used by Albert A. Michelson to first accurately measure the Speed of Light. Bobby was a faithful member of the Community Bible Church in Beaufort, SC.
Survivors include his children, Pam Bates of Savannah, GA, Paula Judenis of Cambridge, WI, and Rob Bates of Mooresville, NC and his sisters, Francis Mulls and Jackie MacMillon. Bobby was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, his parents and his sister Virginia Theile.
Services will be held at Community Bible Church in Beaufort on Saturday, July 7 th at 1 p.m. Bobby will be laid to rest with Peggy in Rincon, GA at a graveside service at 4 p.m.
