Obituary

SHELBY R. STRICKLAND, SR.

GARDEN CITY -- Mr. Shelby Russell Strickland, Sr., 82, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 after well-fought battles with diseases. Mr. Strickland was born on September 1, 1931 in Bryan County, Georgia to James and Edith Strickland. He graduated from Bryan County High School. Soon after he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps being honorably discharged in 1954.
Mr. Strickland retired from the Savannah Sugar Refinery and had worked both in Savannah and in Michigan. He retired after 36 years of service. He continued his contact with many from the Sugar Refinery as he was a member of the Over the Sugar Hill Club.
He was a faithful member of the Chapel-in-the-Gardens Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon, and an Elder.
Mr. Strickland also served Garden City as a City Councilman.
Those surviving Mr. Strickland include his wife of 59 years, Mary Belle Smith Strickland; his three sons S. Russell Strickland, Jr., Brian D. Strickland and Kenneth L. Strickland; his brother Cleveland Strickland; his daughters-in-law Debra Strickland and Patricia Strickland, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces.
The visitation was on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The service to honor Mr. Strickland's life was held at Chapel-in-the-Gardens Presbyterian Church at 93 Main Street in Garden City on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Daren L. Russell officiating. Music was provided by Mr. Buddy Hartley. Active pallbearers were Ralph Davis, Walter Hartley, Tennyson Holder and Steve Jones. Honorary Pallbearers were the Elders and Deacons of Chapel-in-the-Gardens Presbyterian Church, Jay Harrell and members of the Over the Sugar Hill Club. Private Interment followed with military honors.
Active Pallbearers include Ralph Davis, Walter Hartley, Tennyson Holder and Steve Jones.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Chapel-in-the-Gardens, Jay Harrell, Charles Kellam, and members of the Over the Sugar Hill Club.
