On August 29, 2022, Sigmund Hanke lost his battle to an extended fight against multiple medical issues. He has proceeded on to join his wife, Martha Hanke of over 50 years of marriage, and his son, David Hanke. Both have passed before him to help on his journey home. Sigmund has one living son, Donnie Hanke, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was born on January 2, 1939, in Warsaw, Poland to Bronislaw and Maria Hanke. His sister, Josephine Long, brother, Bruno Hanke, along with his dad and mother are Holocaust survivors. He was 10 years old when they left the concentration camp, migrated to New York with $20 and a footlocker of all their belongings and made their way to Morrilton, AR. It was here his father worked at a meat packing plant to set up his home stead.
Sigmund, a Veteran of the United States Army, served as a Staff Sargent, E-6. He went on to pursue his career with the United States Army Corps of engineers as a Civil Engineer in Nashville, TN. He created a secure and successful life for his wife, Martha, and boy's, David and Donnie. He leaves a legacy of a truly loving and supportive solid man for his family and whole heartedly devoted man of God, serving as a Fourth Degree Knight of Our Lady of Lake Catholic Church Knights of Columbus in Hendersonville, TN. He traveled the world for both his occupation and personal travel, seeing many different cultures and lifestyles, enhancing his priorities and perspective on life. His travel destinations included many countries such as, Egypt, Germany, Mexico, and Porta Rico. He became fluent in several different languages.
Sigmund leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Terrene Hanke of Pooler, GA; his five grandchildren and spouses, Erica and Ryan Dujardin, Steve and Samantha Hanke, Sydney Richardson, Gracie Richardson, and JoJo Howard; seven great-grandchildren, Steven Hanke, Jr., Austin Hanke, Andrew Hanke, Amber Hanke, Sullivan Hanke, Johnathan Dujardin and Zoey Hanke.
Sigmund will be laid to rest in St. Vincent Cemetery beside the love of his life, Martha. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Vincent, AR followed with a rosary and service at 11 a.m., the same church he and his wife were married in over 50 years ago.
Pallbearers were, Steven Hanke, Ryan Dujardin, JoJo Howard, Ronnie Hartman, Jimmy Hartman, and Robert Hartman.
