West Chatham Chapel
Savannah-Mr. Silas Johnson, 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 31, 2009. With
family present he was among loving caregivers at Westview Rehabilitation & Nursing
Center in Port Wentworth.
He was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater. He had retired after
30 years with GAF Corporation in Garden City. He was born in Treutlen County to
James W. and Lula F. Johnson and was raised on their farm along with 15 brothers and
sisters who have preceded him to Heaven. He moved to Savannah after marrying his wife
Ruth in 1947 and they raised two children here. They had been married 53 years before
her homegoing in 2000. He was an avid reader, especially of the Bible and liked nothing
better than to talk about Jesus and His word. He always loved singing and would do so
every chance he had.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Brenda Johnson; his daughter and
son-in-law, Gwen and Ruben Bedwell, three grandsons, Chris, Brad (Kim), and Ryan
(Jennifer), 7 great-grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters and several nieces, nephews and
cousins.
I sit here now and watch your life ebb away,
Confident in knowing we'll see you on that great
awakening day
Life passed too swiftly for all things to be said and done
but still the greatest treasure has been won.
Free from worry and pain, you'll walk toward Heaven's
glorious scene
Jesus you'll see face to face
and sit down to bask in His eternal grace
Loved ones will all come around and you'll sing to your
heart's content
To Joyous, Thunderous applause - Glory to God in the
Highest !!!
Gwen J. Bedwell
The graveside funeral for Mr. Johnson will be at 1 p.m. on Monday at Forest Lawn
Memory Gardens on Bonaventure Road in Savannah.
