Stanley Cobern Bailey, age 77, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Stan was born on January 6, 1949, in Bessemer, Alabama. The oldest of five brothers with one older sister, his early childhood days were spent in Greenwood, Alabama where he attended Calvary Baptist Church and sang in a boy’s quartet. His family later moved to Pleasant Grove, Alabama where he still has lifelong friends and family. He graduated from Hueytown High School in 1967, where he was a straight A student. A proud veteran, he served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War in Air Intelligence. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He built a long and respected career as an engineer with Southern Company, where he worked for over 30 years.
A man of many passions and simple joys, Stan loved music—especially playing the guitar, singing duets with his beloved wife, and writing songs. He loved The Eagles, Alabama football, and lending a helping hand to friends and family. Few knew of the moments that revealed his humility and bravery: rescuing a woman from a burning car after witnessing a highway accident and helping save a neighbor during a record flash flood in Evans, Georgia. A faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, Stan was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Pooler, Georgia, and previously served as both a deacon and ruling elder at Cliffwood Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia.
Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He shared 52 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Janet, a relationship marked by enduring love, faithfulness, and deep companionship. He was a loving father to Robert and Andrea, and a proud and cherished grandfather to Anna and Lela, who brought him immense joy. He was a respected mentor and source of wisdom to many of his friends and colleagues, and especially his brothers, Jonathan, James, Mark, and Greg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Faye and Andyle Bailey, his brother Jonathan Bailey, his sister Rita Haney. He is survived by his wife, Janet Bailey; his children, Robert Bailey and Andrea Jarrett and her husband, Patrick Jarrett; and his granddaughters, Anna and Lela Jarrett.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of music, his deep devotion to his family, his servant spirit, and his faith in Christ. His legacy lives on in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
