Ms. Suellen “Sue” Hurt, 85, of Pooler, Georgia, passed away on January 21, 2026, at Candler Hospital, following complications from a long-standing lung illness.
Sue was born in Willie, Georgia (presently known as Fort Stewart in Liberty County), where her family lived on a farm in a large two-story house.
When she was very young, Sue relocated with her parents and siblings to Savannah, Georgia, settling in the Hudson Hill community. She later married her beloved husband, William “Junie” Elba Hurt, Jr., on December 23, 1958, and together they made their home in the Hudson Hill community. In time, Sue and Junie moved with their four children to Pooler, where they lived in the Country Homes community for more than 50 years, raised their family, and built lasting relationships with friends and neighbors who became like family.
Family was everything to Sue. She spoke daily with her children and her sister, often more than once a day, and cherished staying connected with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were truly her pride and joy. She especially loved rocking the babies, a role she embraced with tenderness and joy. Sue was deeply devoted to her husband, caring for him lovingly throughout his illness until his passing.
Sue was a devoted homemaker and worked tirelessly alongside her husband in his shrimping business, helping with heading and selling shrimp. She was affectionately known as “the Shrimp Lady,” a title earned through years of hard work and warm relationships with customers who adored her.
Sue was fiercely independent and took pride in caring for herself, often insisting on not troubling others even when she wasn’t feeling well. She loved working in her yard — planting and replanting her flowers and plants — and found joy in being outdoors. She enjoyed going places, shopping, and simply being around people. In her younger years, she loved the beach, boating, and spending time outside with family and friends.
Sue was baptized at a young age and carried her faith quietly throughout her life. Her kindness, strength, and devotion to family were evident in everything she did.
She is survived by her children, Teri Bennett (Tony), Cheri Hurt, Lisa Stone (Michael), and Michael Hurt (Mychelle); her grandchildren, Jamey, Dustin, Thomas (Leah), Cody, Dylan, Mikey (Madeline), Austin (Kuyler), Brandon, Lindsey (Holden), Marshall, Jeremy (Amber), Telane, Ashley, and Kelsey; 18 great-grandchildren; her sister, Earlene Wilder; her sister-in-law, Clara Sherengo; and several nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, William “Junie” Elba Hurt, Jr.; her parents, William Earl Bacon, Sr. and Annie Lou Strickland Bacon; her granddaughter, Heather Snipes; her great-grandson, Thomas “T.J.” Michael Stone, Jr.; her siblings, Marjorie Brigham, William E. Bacon, Jr., and Mary Imogene “Gene” Williams; and her son-in-law, Herbert James Snipes, Sr.
