Garden City - Mr. Ted Romine, a Limestone County, Alabama native, died peacefully at the age of 86 years, at home on October 22, 2009, surrounded by his loving wife of 63 years, Wanda, his son, Bonnie, and friends. He was preceded in death by two of his sons, Teddy and David, and his daughter-in-law, Teresa G. Romine. Ted had a zeal for life, which was demonstrated by his love for his wife, family, church, and community.

Ted was a member of the Central Church of Christ on Stephenson Avenue. His love for the Lord and people motivated his involvement in serving on numerous church committees to further the church's growth. One of Ted's many ministries was sending birthday cards to friends, which always included an evangelistic message.

Ted served his county in the U.S. Army as a World War II veteran seeing extensive combat in the Pacific Theater.

Ted started Romine, Inc. in 1956, which specialized in heavy industrial and commercial construction. Ted initially learned about construction as a welder and pipe fitter, joining the Seamfitter Union 188 in 1946. In the late 1960's, Ted began to refocus his work interest to real estate acquisition and development by forming Port Properties and Romine Enterprises.

Ted's community endeavors included commitment to both civic and political involvement. Ted was one of the few Republicans in Chatham County in the early 1960's, having been active in many political campaigns beginning with Barry Goldwater. In 2002, Ted was recognized for his achievements for the Chatham County Republican party by being awarded its top award, which is the J.C. Lewis, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to serving the Republican party, he served on the Garden City Council and as Treasurer of the political campaign for the State Representative Ron Stephens.

Ted's civic service started with membership in the Lions Club, having been a member for 45 years with perfect attendance. Ted showed his servant attitude by serving on the Boy Scout Council, Coastal Children Advocacy Center, Georgia International and Maritime Trade Center Authority, Georgia Sheriff Association and charter board member of First National Bank of Effingham, now BB&T.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Marie Romine; son, Bonnie W. Romine of Garden City; four grandchildren, Daniel S. (Shalah) Romine, St. Augustine, FL, Christopher M. (Rachel) Romine, Virginia Beach, VA, Candice G. (Ryan) Huttinger, St. Augustine, FL, Travis O. (Jennifer) Romine, Virginia Beach, VA; and ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
