Garden City-Mr. Theodore Eugene Helmey, 88, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.
The Effingham County native had lived in Garden City for many years. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and retired from CSX Railroad after 45 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and he was an avid NASCAR fan. He and his late wife, Marie Hinely Helmey, enjoyed camping and they visited 49 states as well as Canada and Mexico.
Survivors include three daughters and their spouses, Linda & Jerry Bridgforth of Garden City, Wilma & Ron Garing of Garden City and Ginny & Terry Highsmith of Illinois; two grandchildren, Tammy & Howie Dent of Guyton and Jeremy & Rais Hendrix of Port Wentworth; great-grandson, Jakob Hendrix of Port Wentworth; sisters, Mildred Nease and Betty Porter; the Munford family of Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 41 Main Street in Garden City. Mr. Helmey will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Springfield with military honors.
