Rincon – Thomas Edward Kirkland, 76, passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at Bryan County Health & Rehab.
The Emanuel County native was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He retired from Local #728 where he was a former Union Steward and from Effingham County Sanitation Dept. He held the positions of Field Director, State Conservation Director, Regional Conservation Director, and National Conservation Director for the National Campers and Hikers Association, Inc. over the 20 year span of activity with the NCHA.
He was called to serve on the State High Council as the Springfield/Rincon Branch President for 3 years, Bishop of the Savannah 3rd Ward for 5 years and then back to the State High Council for his 26 years span of callings in the Church.
He was a much loved diplomatic volunteer that served in his community all of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Gordy Kirkland; sons, Timothy Edward Kirkland, Sr. of Rincon and Victor Payne Kirkland of Yuma, AZ; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ray Kirkland of Aline and Henry Clay Kirkland of Lyons.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Friday at Cool Springs Cemetery near Aline.
