Faulkville-Mr. Thomas "Tom" Benjamin Byrd, Sr., died on Monday, December 8, 2008
at Hospice House of Savannah.
He was the first official Chief of Police of Port Wentworth, GA and the owner of Tom
Byrd Motors. He was a World War II Veteran and a member of the Faulkville Baptist
Church where he served as a Deacon and a leader for many years. He was a member of
the Senior Citizens of Pooler where he loved to shoot pool with his buddies. He was
preceded in death by a son, Tommy Byrd of Jacksonville, FL and a daughter, Linda Byrd
of Savannah.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty Faye Johnson Byrd of the home; children,
Ricky Byrd of Faulkville, Mike Byrd of Savannah, Grady and Arlene Taylor of the home,
Sissy and Harold Formby of Faulkville and Gary Byrd of Faulkville; grandchildren, Brad
and Lee Formby, Brian Formby, Joshua Formby, all of Faulkville, Ashley Byrd of
Savannah, Melissa Wade of Bloomingdale, Michael Byrd of Richmond Hill, Hannah and
Abigail Taylor of Faulkville; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at the Thomas
C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home in Pooler.
The funeral will be at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the chapel of the Thomas C.
Strickland & Sons Funeral Home in Pooler. Burial will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery.
Anyone who knew him, knew his word was good as gold. He will be greatly missed by
his family, friends and Church family.
