Van Edward Findley
Rincon – Van Edward Findley, 79, passed away October 10, 2018 at Azalealand Nursing Home.
He was born in Emmanuel County and grew up in Savannah, GA. He served proudly for 4 years in the U.S. Marines. Effingham County has been his home for the past 39 years. Van was a longtime member of Rincon First Christian Church and had served there as a deacon. He loved his church and his church family.
Van's law enforcement career began as a policeman in Port Wentworth and as a deputy with the Chatham County Sheriff's Department. Van was appointed and sworn in as Sheriff of Effingham County on November 22, 1983. He served as Sheriff of Effingham County until his retirement in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Greeley and Hattie Mae Rich Findley; sister, Virginia Nelson; mother-in-law, Rubye Clark and father-in-law, Malcolm Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Findley; sisters, Frances Allen, Peggy Moore (Ed), and Vicki Lang (David); brothers, Jerry Findley (Judy) and Larry Findley (Jane Payne); sister-in-law, Ginger Shore; brother-in-law, Claude Shore; many precious nieces and nephews; and many close and loving friends.
Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Rincon First Christian Church. Funeral services will follow at 12 noon. All current and retired law enforcement will be honorary pallbearers.
Interment will follow in Guyton Cemetery.
