Port Wentworth-Mrs. Vernalee Grovenstein Mercer, 85, passed away on Sunday,
December 20, 2009 at the Christian City Nursing Home in Union City.
Mrs. Mercer was born in Effingham County and had lived in Port Wentworth for most of
her life before moving to the Atlanta area for health reasons. She was a retired school bus
driver for the Chatham County school system. She was a member of the Port Wentworth
United Methodist Church for many years and was preceded in death by her husband,
Marcell Mercer. Mrs. Mercer was involved with many Church and community activities.
One of her greatest joys was camping every year with their many friends and relatives.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn & Connie Mercer of Newnan;
grandchildren, Melanie Mercer, Stephanie McMurray and Chris Foster and four
great-grandchildren, Jacob, Rebekah, Ben and Alex; her brothers, Lowell Grovenstein
and Rev. Charles Grovenstein and their families.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, December 27 at the funeral home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. on Monday, December 28 at the Port Wentworth United Methodist
Church with Rev. Charles Grovenstein, Rev. Grabel Page and Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Pallbearers will be Charles (Chuck) Grovenstein, Dave Grovenstein, Dan Grovenstein, Robbie White, Kenny Dumas and David Warren. Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery.
