Vernon Kenneth "Kenny" Heidt
Guyton – Vernon Kenneth " Kenny" Heidt, 90, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Candler Hospital.
He was born on July 17, 1921 in Marlow to the late Joe and Hattie Heidt. Kenny and his family moved to Savannah in 1923 where remained until 1938. He joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for twelve years, fighting in WWII and Korean Wars. In 1950 he worked for the CB&Q Railroad in Chicago for two years. Kenny worked at the Savannah Shipyard during the dayshift until his retirement in 1985 and as a guard for the Savannah Police Department for 10 years. Upon retirement he began donating the majority of his time volunteering or helping others with his many skills and talents.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and currently a member of Bible Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, four sisters, and cousin Nellie Trout.
Survivors include his cousin Barbara Barton with whom he made his home for over thirty-eight years until moving in with his nephew, Vernon last July; a special sister-in-law, Mary Heidt; numerous nephews and nieces; great-nephews and great-nieces; cousins and friends.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. in the chapel.
Remembrances may be given to Bible Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 883, Rincon, GA 31326.
