Pooler-Mrs. Virginia Lou Thomas Smith, 96, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Westview Nursing Home in Port Wentworth.
Virginia was born in Hampton, SC but became a lifetime resident of Pooler when she married Harry Willard "Shiney" Smith in 1934. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and taking care of family and friends.
Preceding Virginia in death was her husband of 50 years, Harry Willard Smith; three sisters, Mary Baker and Velona Wingate of Pooler and Ruth Berry of Walterboro, SC; two brothers, Harold Thomas of Savannah and Gerald Thomas of Hampton, SC.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, W. Tommy Smith (Nita) of Charlotte, NC and H. Wendell Smith (Marcia) of Guyton; grandchildren, Kyle Smith (Kim) of Charlotte, NC, Corey Smith (Jennifer) of Charlotte, NC, Wendi Smith Maxfield (Tim) of Liberty, KY and Marva Smith (Romie) of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren, Zach Smith, Hailey Smith, Sarah Smith, Taylor Smith and Blaine Smith, all of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Frankie Caldwell of Hampton, S.C. and Eleanor Ashworth of Savannah, GA and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Loran Smith officiating. Pallbearers will be Olvid Edwards, Kermit Smith, Tommy White, Jake Mullins, Ned Winter, Ike LaRoche and James "Buddy" Iler, Jr. Burial will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery.
