Walter Wilbur Dumas passed away on April 30, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 26,1922 to Effie Bachelor and James Denton Dumas in McRae, Georgia. He was one of seven children, six boys and one girl. He was married to Pollie E. Dumas for 66 wonderful years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and gardening. Living in his home in Port Wentworth for 75 years, his impact on the community was immeasurable. His camellias brought many by to admire their beauty and stop for a chat. He was loved and known by everyone as "Mr. Wilbur," "WW," "Deer Slayer" and "Pa-Pa." He rarely missed a Braves game on TV and always knew the latest game's score. He was a faithful member of the Port Wentworth United Methodist Church for over seventy years and was a charter member of the Oscar Bell and Nona Grovenstein Sunday School Classes. He was also an active member of the United Methodist Men's Club. He was a 70 year member of Frank F. Baker Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He told his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren many stories of his time during his service, like being in the Philippines when the first atomic bomb was dropped in Japan and being in the harbor of Tokyo Bay when the Paris Peace Treaties were signed. Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Pollie E. Dumas, his parents, Effie Bachelor and James Denton Dumas; five brothers, one sister, all of their spouses; several nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren (Roy and Troy). He is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Kessler (Jud); two sons, Kenny Dumas (Sue) and David Dumas (Pam); five grandchildren, Gerald Kessler (Amanda), Kristi Taylor, Walter Dumas (Lauren), Lauren Hollar (Aaron), and Lyndsay Smith (Chad); nine great-grandchildren, Gerald Tyler Kessler (Taylor), Ashtian Kessler, Blade and Aidan Taylor, Erin and Wyatt Dumas, Henson Smith, Blake and Blair Hollar; and one great-great-granddaughter Addisyn Kessler and several nieces and nephews. The v isitation will be Saturday, May 6, 2023, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Thomas C. Strickland & Son's Funeral Home in Pooler, Georgia with funeral service immediately following at 12 noon in the chapel of the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be sent in his memory to Port Wentworth United Methodist Church, 201 Turnberry Street, Port Wentworth, Georgia, 31407. Thomas C.
