Effingham County-Mr. Walter E. Hammond, Sr., 66, died on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at
Hospice Savannah.

Mr. Hammond was born in Spartanburg, SC and had lived in the Richmond
Hill/Effingham area since 1977. He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service
including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also retired from the Chatham County Board
of Education as the Transportation Maintenance Manager. He enjoyed riding his
motorcycle, woodworking and camping. He was a member of the Alpha United
Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Joyce Hammond.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy George Hammond of Effingham County; sons and
daughters-in-law, Walter E. Hammond, Jr. of Hope Mills, NC, Mike & Rhonda
Hammond of Effingham County, Mark & Molly Hammond of Statesboro, Shannon &
Sherry Hammond of James Island, SC and Aaron & Vicky Hammond of Stillmore;
step-children, Donald Rushing of Garden City, Rebecca Dillbeck of Savannah and
Andrew Rushing of Varnville, SC; fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren;
brothers, Stanley Hammond of Greenwood, SC and Dennis Hammond of Greer, SC and a
number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home,
West Chatham Chapel in Pooler.

Funeral: 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Alpha United Methodist Church. Mr. Hammond will
lie in state from 10-11 a.m. at the Church.

Additional Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Ramey Funeral Home, 202 North
Rudolph Street in Saluda, SC 29138.

Graveside Funeral: 11 a.m. on Thursday at Mason Cemetery across from Good Hope
Baptist Church in Saluda.
