Springfield – Wendel H. Wilson, 80, passed away June 2, 2025, at his home.
Mr. Wilson was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, where he served as a deacon and on the finance committee. He taught Sunday School for over 45 years of his life. A graduate of Georgia Southern University, he remained deeply connected to the university as a long-term member of the Georgia Southern Boosters, which became the Georgia Southern Athletics Foundation. He served on the Foundation's board and executive committee, including many years as treasurer. He was also a proud member of the 1906 Society.
Mr. Wilson served in the National Guard and owned and operated a CPA firm for many years. He was past president of the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce and an active member of the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, and the 2195 Hotel Development and Management Group.
An original player on the first Springfield Little League baseball team formed in 1956, Mr. Wilson had a lifelong love of baseball and travel, especially with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry Rudolph Wilson and Dreta Exley Wilson; his brother, Varnie Wilson; and sister-in-law, Patsy Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Burns Wilson; daughters, Darnett Coleman (Eddie) and Carlett Fulcher (Lee); son, Kevin Wilson (Christie); grandchildren, Lance Coleman (Emily), Taylor Smith (Hunter), Perry Fulcher, Austin Fulcher, Blake Fulcher, and Bailee Grace Wilson; great-grandchildren, Will and Parker Coleman, and Lander Smith; sister, Rachel Wilson (Ellis); brother, Charles Wilson; sister-in-law, Priscilla Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Springfield.
Interment will follow at Effingham Memorial Gardens.
