PORT WENTWORTH: Mr. William S. "Billy" Gnann, 88. died November 25, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was a native of Clyo and was a long time resident of Port Wentworth. He was a member of the Port Wentworth First Baptist Church for 62 years, where he was a Deacon, and usher and a greeter. He was also a member of the W. S. Gnann Sunday School Class He was a veteran of the U. S. Army where he was a Military Policeman. He received several medals and was in the Battle of the Bulge and participated in the Normady Invasion. He was active in Port Wentworth civic affairs, including being a member of the Lions Club for 54 years. In the Lions Club, he never missed a meeting having attended 1296 straight meetings. He held every office including Vice President and President and was entered in the Hall of Fame in 2004. He was Port Wentworth Lions Club Man of the Year for 1974, 1991, 1994, 1995, and 1996. He was the Port Wentworth Man of the Year in 1990 and the Port Wentworth Citizen of the year in 1992. He was a Master Mason for 50 years. He was recognized for outstanding support by the West Chatham Softball League in 1997, and for outstanding service to the Port Wentworth Elementary School in 2007. He was Grand Marshall for the Port Wentworth Stand Up For America in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pansy B. Gnann of Port Wentworth, children, Durwood (Debbie) Gnann of Whitesburg, Ga, and Marsha (Delray) Carlee of Pooler; grandchildren, Melissa (Jake) Cordle of Douglasville, Laura (Jeff) Schillinger of Douglasville, Cody Carlee of Pooler, Drs. Jason (Lyndsey) Powers of Milan, TN, Trent (Laura) Carlee of Newnan, great grandchildren, Ansley and Sarah Cordle and Mattie and Gavin Carlee; two sisters, Mary Edwards of Clyo and Lois Thomas of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home in Pooler.
Services will be 11 A.M. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
