GARDEN CITY: Mr. William D. "Doug" Burgess, 79, died December 11, 2008, at Hospice Savannah.

He was a long time resident of Garden City. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Stokes Burgess, a son, William Burgess, a granddaughter, Emily Burgess, his mother, Pearl Tillen, and a special friend, Mick Mamalakis.

He had a special hobby raising animals, and loved the outdoors. He was in the construction business and formed his first company, The Golden Isles Builders, Inc., in the 1960s. Through this company, he was a primary developer of homes on Hilton Head Island. In 1981, he became a partner with the Ansley, Sheppard and Burgess construction company. His most noteworthy projects included the supervision of the construction of Holy Family Catholic Church on Hilton Head Island, which at the time was the largest Catholic church in South Carolina. Mr. Burgess donated the alter for the church which was the base of a cypress tree taken from his river property. In addition to Holy Cross, he supervised the construction of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island and the first Savannah Christian Church on Tibet Avenue.

He was a member of Solomon's Lodge #1, the Scottish Rite of Savannah, the Alee Temple Shriners, and the Oriental Band.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia Lawrence, two sons, Dennis P. Burgess and Andra R. Burgess, grandchildren, Dennis Paul, Melina, Dena, Les, Jason, Sarah, Jessica, Amanda, Justin and Brian, great grandchildren, TreLeigh, Layla, Tiffani, Allie, Kenzie, Devin, Cameron, Hailey, and Hunter, several special nieces and nephews, and his adopted family, the Kirbys of Swainsboro.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Saturday at Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home in Pooler.

Graveside services will be 2 P.M. Sunday at Elkins Cemetery on Highway 204.

The family expresses a special thanks to Dr. Anthony Costrini and his staff for their great care.
