Mr. William Hugh Elton, Jr., 76, of Pooler, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Hospice Savannah.

He was born in Savannah and was preceded in death by his parents, William Hugh Elton, Sr. & Elizabeth Sheppard Gnann; his mother-in-law, Lizzie Crabb Copeland, and his step-mother, Mildred Elton.  He was a member of the Bloomingdale First Baptist Church and was ordained as a Deacon in 1976.  He was employed many years for Massey Funeral Home and retired from the Georgia Port Authority.  After retirement, he worked part-time at Strickland Funeral Home in Pooler and later at the Effingham County Sheriffs Department serving in the court system as Baliff where his co-workers became part of his family.  He was an avid fisherman but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl C. Elton; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Hugh Elton, III & Rhonda, and Sanford Elton & Erin; grandchildren, Marc, Zach, Annie, Josie & Caleb; sisters, Nancy Gunter and Joette Stripling; a number of nieces and nephews and his dogs, Buddy and Ethel.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Westside Memorial Gardens.
