IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Billy"
Royal
June 22, 1945 – December 26, 2025
William "Billy" Royal passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family. A lifelong resident of Effingham County, Billy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and servant to his community whose life reflected faith, dedication, and steady leadership.
Billy was raised in Egypt and graduated from Effingham County High School in 1963. He later attended Georgia Southern College, where he studied business administration. He spent many years working in the local business community, including employment with Royal's TV and Appliance in Egypt and later with Union Camp's Woodland Division.
Billy had a deep commitment to public service and education. He was first elected to the Effingham County Board of Education in 1976 and served for many years. During his time on the board, he was proud of the growth and improvements within the school system, particularly in facilities and the overall quality of education.
A man of faith, Billy was a longtime member of Elam Egypt Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer and was actively involved in church life. His faith guided the way he lived, served, and cared for others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph "Pat" Royal and Marion Wilson Royal, and his brother, Ronnie Royal.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Royal; his children, Rhonda Pye, David Royal (Sheri), grandchildren Carli Porter(Cameron), Ryan Pye (Hannah), and Alex Royal (Michaela Rahn); and his beloved great-grandchildren, Emory and Grant Porter. He is also survived by his sister Kay Bowers; nephew, Ronnie Royal, Jr.; and many loving members of his wife's family and extended relatives.
Billy will be remembered for his quiet leadership, strong values, and unwavering devotion to his family, church, and community. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so well.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
