Port Wentworth-Mr. W.J. "Bill" Chant, 75, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Chant was born in Cambridge, MA and he was an active member for 54 years of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was the recipient of the Gartland Service Award for the Diocese of Savannah in 2002. He served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Jack W. Wilkie "One Stack Jack". He was a former employee of Kaiser and retired from Continental Field Machining South. He was a member of the American Legion Post 135 and a past member of the U.S. Jaycees. He was a former mayor for Port Wentworth, former Port Wentworth Scout Master of Troup 100 and was active in coaching Little League Baseball and football. He was formally employed with the Savannah Police Department in the Motorcycle Division as well as employed with the Port Wentworth Police. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and a member of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.).
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Chant of Port Wentworth; children, Tom "T.C." Chant of Port Wentworth, Johnny Chant of Rincon and Timmy Chant of Port Wentworth; grandchildren, Aubrey & Madeline Chant; sister, Geraldine Fournier of Littleton, MA; brother, Vincent D. Chant of Littleton, MA and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. on Thursday with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Port Wentworth. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
