Wylle Myrtice Altman Ray
Rincon – Wylle Myrtice Altman Ray, 94, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
She was born on March 12, 1920, in Evans County, Claxton, GA, to Claude Leroy Altman and Mary Rebecca Todd Altman. She was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She married Benjamin F. Ray, Jr. on April 17, 1938, and they lived in Willie, GA which is now part of Fort Stewart. They moved to Savannah and she helped her husband in his contracting business as bookkeeper.
Pre-deceasing her in death were her parents; her husband of seventy-five years, Benjamin Franklin Ray, Jr., who died on July 12, 2013; her son-in-law, James Russell Lewis who died on October 11, 2000; and her only sibling, Melrose Altman Banks, who died on January 29, 2011.
She loved her family and always made time for them including her children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who knew her as "Big Mema." Birthdays and special occasions were a priority where she cooked dinners and favorite foods for each one.
She was quick witted, and had a sharp mind in recalling family genealogy right up to the end of her life.
Her memory lingers in the hearts of her two daughters, LaVone R. Brown and her husband, Sonney, and Elizabeth Lewis; grandchildren, Jeanne Marsh, Susan Culpepper and her husband, Michael; and Benjamin Lewis, and Jessica Graham (John).
Great-grandchildren include Sydney Marsh Lewis (Christopher), Brandon Ashley Lewis, William Russell Culpepper; great-great-grandchildren, Audrey Quinn Graham and Nora Kathleen Graham. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, and special cousins, Charles and Beverly Mixson, and friend Sandra Atkinson.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2014 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Old Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church on Hwy. 80 near Stilson, GA with Dr. Reland Morgan officiating. Mrs. Ray will lie in state for one hour before the funeral.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
