Mrs. Zena Cannon Carter
Guyton-Mrs. Zena Cannon Carter, 70, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at
Hospice House after an extended illness.
Mrs. Carter was born in Bulloch County and lived most of her life in Chatham County
and attended Savannah High School. She was employed for many years by the
Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education working at Savannah Vo-Tech School
and retiring from Charles Ellis Elementary School in 1992. She was a member of Port
Wentworth United Methodist Church for over forty years where she served as treasurer of
the Amy Exley Bible Class for over 10 years.
After retirement she and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling, having visited
every state at least once. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her five grandsons
and watching them grow into fine young men. She was preceded in death by her
step-father, Earl P. Ford and sister, Jean Ford.
Survivors include her loving husband of 51 years, J.T. Carter of Guyton; son and
daughter-in-law, Earl L. "Buddy" and Amy Carter of Pooler; daughter and son-in-law,
Cecilia "Cissie" and Craig Hutcheson of Waycross; five wonderful grandsons, Joel Carter
of New York, NY, Barrett Carter of Athens, Travis Carter of Pooler, Kyle Hutcheson of
Athens and Canon Hutcheson of Waycross; her mother, Armene Ford of Garden City;
two sisters, Judy Shinn and Pat Dillinger of Savannah; two sisters-in-law, Louella
Whitaker of Stapleton and Geraldine Bennett of Prattville, AL; one brother-in-law,
Charles Carter of Eden and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Port Wentworth United Methodist Church with burial
to follow at Rincon Cemetery.
